Recording Live – Continued

July 23, 2011

Today I recorded a 2-piece Punk band called Cycle Schmeichel in a local youth club. We used the main room which has high angled ceilings about 15ft high as opposed to where I recorded Parkway Fires in February which was in a smaller room in the same youth club. I recorded these guys live from the floor, not even headphones for monitoring, then got them to overdub vocals later.

As you can see from the picture, I didn’t use any sound seperation besides a few cuts of foam to place around the snare and hi tom mic as I really wanted to get a live recording from these guys. Despite the Marshall half stack being 3/4 of the way up in volume, I was surprised how little bleed there was in the drum mics – even the overheads aren’t really that affected by it. As for the two mics I used on the guitar cab (an SM57 and an AKG D112) these have virtually no bleed in them.
